SPECIFICITY
In order for athletes to improve within any training program, the program must target specific performance requirements, specific muscle groups, energy systems and all the components of fitness, as Touch is a high intensity sport that uses up all of the energy systems. The training program would need to train all three in order to be effective. The different movement that is used within game play should also be specifically trained to improve the athlete’s skills such as jogging and then sprinting, weaving, and also backwards running.
The training program that the Heights College touch football team will undergoing pre-season does indeed have a great combination of different training sets for all three energy systems with a small focus on the aerobic system, which is an effective way of training all of the energy systems for touch as the aerobic energy system is the most commonly used.
Not only does the training program train the Energy System, it also trains Muscular Endurance and also Flexibility which are two other important factors that influence a touch player during game and are both essential in a training program.
In order for the program to be effective it must train agility, speed, strength, power and endurance which are all components of fitness; as Touch is a quick, and intense sport. The training program has these components integrated into its program structure, and also has weight training, flexibility training, and running training.
However, the training session spends little time training the skills required to play the sport, and more time training the physical needs and requirements of the athlete. The training program could be improved and made more effective by adding more drills to improve the motor skills that are required for the athlete when playing touch football.
